(Port) Wine of the month April 2019: Quinta do Portal AURU 2001

When I visited Quinta do Portal in 2018, chief-enologist Paulo Coutinho remembered to taste the first edition of their Icon wine AURU with me. After a long dinner he opened a Magnum, because he lacked regular size bottles. Since we only tasted one glass of this fantastic wine each, there was a lot left in the bottle which I took with me to evaluate the evolution with oxygen. Still medium intense reflections in the dark-red colour. Very complex aromas in the bouquet with coffee and chocolate. The palate reveals balanced red-berry fruits, milk-chocolate and black cherry with perfectly integrated tannins. Long aftertaste. Even the 40 degrees outside could not harm the wine, which got better with every day. 19/20
